We tried to go to the glass-making isle of Murano on the ferry, but too many people, too much rain and too few ferries added up to a no go. We ventured over to Ferrovia stop (the railway station) as a sort of dry run for leaving town on Sunday. From there we tried to take the #3 vaporetto out to Murano, but gave up after an hour. We never saw a #3... and then, trying to get home, every bus pulling in was full of people.
Three #1 boats pulled in and out before we could squeeze aboard. We were like a tub of wet sardines! Luckily we only had five stops to go.
Today was the first day since we arrived that the fish market was up and running. Imagine two buildings filled with stalls of freshly caught fish and shellfish...
nice shrimp! |
check out the octopus! |
huge scallops |
We explored our neighborhood some -- finding some unique shops and checking out restaurants for dinner. The grey skies made for some interesting shadows in the narrow pathways.
There's this one place down the block that has fish tanks and chairs... you can sit in the chair and have cleaner fish nibble away at your calloused feet, or in another chair you can get a fish manicure. This is one shop that draws a crowd-- even on a rainy day.
lunch, and planning where to go |
We grabbed a calzone at a local pizza stand -- they flattened it and warmed it in a panini press, which made it nice and crispy. We took it back to the apartment became lunch and ate it while laughing at some of the rain gear. One particular favorite -- knee high plastic boots that were little more than blue plastic bags. We later found some at a nearby store- four Euros for a pair!
Tonight we dined at Osteria al Garanghelo, right down the street from the apartment. I had tagiatelli with shrimp, artichokes and lemon.
Scott had spaghetti alla ragu.
