Dunedin, NZ Saturday 11 Mar

For our visit to Dunedin, we actually pulled into Port Chalmers (or Port Otago to use the Maori designation),  We walked over to the Port Chalmers Yacht Club and picked up our boat for what was billed as a wildlife, harbor cruise.  It was a day to remember.

This is a New Zealand sea lion killing and eating an octopus.  We watched as flipped the octopus around, kind of like a dog shaking his head with something in his mouth.  He was persistent... and managed to eat the whole thing.

It took 18 minutes to download that one picture... so I gave up.  We are sitting outside a nice bakery in Tauranga enjoying their free WiFi, so I can get a little caught up.

Here are some more of the pictures of the sea lion.

After we saw him, we went out to the end of the bay where there were some bird rookeries and some fur seals.

The pups go as high as possible to stay out of the area where sea lions can reach.  The moms leave them in this area while they go offshore to fish.

We went out to the tide line.  The captain called it the supermarket of the sea.  We saw a giant petrel and a white capped albatross.

This is Otago lighthouse.  This high headlands is home to s number of bird rookeries.

No these are not penguins...
but a relative of the cormorant - the spotted shag.

After leaving the headlands at the mouth of the bay,
we encountered some blue penguins (the smallest penguin species).

they don't look blue because they have been molting

When we got back to the pier, Rachel tied up at a different pier from where we had left Scott's scooter.  As I ran to get it, she realized that, and yelled "I'll deliver him!!"

After lunch, we ventured into town to explore.  Rather than a town square, they have an Octagon.

When we got back to the pier, I stopped to use the free wifi in the pier central hall.  As I walked up the pier, Scott greeted me from our balcony.

The view of the pier as we departed.  With the exception of Eden and Melbourne, these are all working ports...
