More Melk

Everyone is at a lecture on the European Union, I should not have competition for the internet now.

These are pictures of the abbey church in Melk.  The first is of the façade which faces the Danube.  From the balcony in front you can see for miles.  The second two are of the inside.  The Abbott hired an Italian architect who was better known for opera houses than churches.... so his inside has royal boxes high above the floor where the royals could watch the service without being seen by the masses.  You can see the side altar with a gilded box above. The other picture is of the high altar.

When we sailed it was just about sunset.  We had to wait our turn to go into the lock, and we had to wait for two other barges to join us in the lock.  It only took about 15 minutes to fill the lock.
